BBHQ Boomer Essays:

Life is Good!

Our Boomer-In-Charge at BBHQ, Hershel Chicowitz, writes about boomer memories and current events... from a boomer’s perspective. He is sometimes funny, sometimes provocative, some-
times a little of each. We hope you get a kick out of our Boomer Essays.

The media and the doomsday prophets are telling us that we are destroying life, that life is miserable, and that it is our fault. As a proud, prosperous, and hard-working American, I am sick and tired of hearing that false and damaging propaganda every time I turn on the TV. I am angry at people who make money by telling us that we are causing the decline of civilization – when exactly the opposite is true.

NON-MEMBER PREVIEW

Life is good... very, very good!

Every now and then, and especially now, we need a reminder of just how good life is here in the United States (and most of the rest of the free world).

Why, from watching TV, you’d think that we were rapidly going downhill, and that the tragic end were just around the corner. At a conference of entrepreneurs in California, venture capitalist John Doerr choked with emotion as he spoke. “I’m scared,” he told the audience, looking down at his 15-year-old daughter in the front row. “I don’t think we’re going to make it.” 1

The glass is half empty: “[W]e could be the first generation in a very long time that leaves an America behind that is a little poorer and a little meaner than the one we inherited from our parents, and that’s unacceptable.” —Barack Obama.

Respected NBC News correspondent Bill Blakemore has reported on numerous wars throughout his career. He said that global warming is the most challenging story he has covered. “It’s surreal to have pre-eminent scientists tell us very seriously that civilization as we know it is over,” Blakemore said. “The scale is unprecedented. It touches every aspect of life.” 2

It’s “surreal” because it is simply not true.

In fact, life and our environment have never been better. Life is good; very, very good — and getting better. I’d like to remind you of clear evidence of that.

Living Well

Perhaps the most indicative measurement tool of the health and vitality of a people is life expectancy. When my father was born (early in the 20th century), life expectancy was about 47 years. Today, it is 77... and rising. That’s right; rising! One of the reasons that you hear so much about the problems of the elderly today is that they are there — they exist — they live! — in huge numbers.
Why, when I was a kid, if you made it to 77, you were an exception. And life was not likely particularly good for you. But today, Mrs. Kaye, the mother of my former college roommate, is 89, and she still plays golf (the real, 18-hole kind) twice a week. Life is good; very, very good.

“I don’t think we’re going to make it” — ??? Balderdash!

The BBHQ Feature Album is "Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)," by Simon & Garfunkel. If you were fortunate enough to see them in concert in 2003, I do not have to sell you. The concert was terrific! This album collection includes 55 songs, plus their new recording, "Citizen of the Planet," and one of the songs sung by the Everly Brothers during the concert. The DVD was recorded during their concert in Madison Square Garden in 2003. For any S&G fan, this is a must have! But then, you knew that already, didn't you? Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)

The BBHQ Feature Book is “Bobby Rydell – Teen Idol on the Rocks.” This is a “behind the scenes” story of one of the boomers’ first rock n’ roll stars. Told in the first person, Bobby chronicles his short ride to the pinnacle of fame and fortune, his glide through the 70s and 80s, and how he nearly lost it all. Relax; it has a happy ending. Bobby was (and is) a “normal” Philly guy... with an absolute love of music and an amazing gift. For any fan of early rock n’ roll, it’s a wonderful story. And yes, Bobby Rydell is still on tour, playing to boomer fans all over the world. Click here for a closer look at the book.
