BBHQ Boomer Essays:

Money 101: A Dramatic Approach to Reducing the Debt

Our Boomer-In-Charge at BBHQ, Hershel Chicowitz, writes about boomer memories and current events... from a boomer's perspective. He is sometimes funny, sometimes provocative, some-
times a little of each. We hope you get a kick out of our Boomer Essays.

We must start by acknowledging that there are some projects that look and sound nice, and may indeed help make our country stronger and better. Other organizations (such as churches, charities, and the private sector) can fill the necessary gaps. And other projects may be worthwhile; but the federal government cannot afford them. The federal government has proved that it is unable to manage such projects effectively and efficiently. To attempt to do so is not worth the cost of seriously jeopardizing the safety, security and freedom of future generations. To fund projects, no matter how worthwhile or well-intentioned, using borrowed money is irresponsible and unacceptable. Period.

NON-MEMBER PREVIEW

February, 2011:

This week I propose a dramatic, new approach to reducing the federal debt. But before I do so, I'd like to set the stage:

• The debt that we are currently accumulating is dramatically higher than at any time in history.

• This debt is an immoral atrocity that will cripple future generations.

• While the debt figure itself is an abstract concept, the interest that we pay on the debt every year severely limits our ability to do other, necessary things.

• The problem is not that we do not collect enough revenue; the problem is that, no matter how much revenue we collect, our legislators spend too much.

• The objective must be not be to "get the deficit under control," but rather to eliminate the deficit.

Please look closely at those five items. We must agree on those principles. If we do not, it will be impossible to agree on an approach to restructuring our budget. So read those items closely. Current Plans: Cowardly and Inadequate

President Obama has placed a freeze on federal government employee salaries. Please! Your salary is frozen... so, your manager promotes you -- perhaps to a new position he just created -- at a new, higher salary. This is kids' stuff. The president's theatrics are, at the very least, disingenuous. In my view, they are dangerously deceptive.

In an interview before the Super Bowl on Sunday, President Obama said that he is proposing to cut $400 billion. That's That's nothing! Absolutely nothing.

The BBHQ Feature Album is "Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)," by Simon & Garfunkel. If you were fortunate enough to see them in concert in 2003, I do not have to sell you. The concert was terrific! This album collection includes 55 songs, plus their new recording, "Citizen of the Planet," and one of the songs sung by the Everly Brothers during the concert. The DVD was recorded during their concert in Madison Square Garden in 2003. For any S&G fan, this is a must have! But then, you knew that already, didn't you? Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)

The BBHQ Feature Book is "The 5000 Year Leap," by W. Cleon Skousen. The title does not adequately identify the content, though the concept of the 5,000 year leap is astounding. The subtitle, Principles of Freedom 101, is much more applicable to the subject. This book carefully and clearly summarizes the thinking of the brilliant founding fathers of our country, the ideas behind the "miracle that changed the world."
