BBHQ Boomer Essays:

Global Warming Warning

Our Boomer-In-Charge here at BBHQ, Hershel Chicowitz, writes frequently about current events... from a boomer perspective. He is sometimes funny, sometimes provocative, sometimes a little of each. We hope you get a kick out of our Boomer Essays.

February, 2007:

One of the valid criticisms of the boomer generation is that we (as a group) believe that the earth revolves around us. We think that we are the center of the universe, that the world was made for us, that nothing that happened before we were born matters, that we know it all, and that those who came before us know nothing, that we are the first generation to experience life and all is challenges.

The elites in our generation believe that they are responsible for everything good in the world, and that the rest of us are to blame for everything that is bad.

The first moon landing, the Beatles, birth control pills, the feminist movement, the ending of the Vietnam War, and of course, the first boomer president. It is allllllll about us.

Never mind that we were merely observers of the first moon landing, that none of the Beatles is actually a boomer, that birth control pills may have caused as many problems as they have solved, that we lost the Vietnam War, and that the most memorable thing about the first boomer president will be lying under oath about a stain on a blue dress.

None of that matters all that much.

What does matter is that the elites of our generation believe that they have the solutions to all the problems that the rest of us have created. All we have to do is change our entire way of life, as per their wishes. (Mind you, the elites do not have to change anything; they are exempt from the restrictions and the restructuring they want to impose on the rest of us.)

Exhibit A: Global warming.

The elites in our generation -- and yes, we are running the show now -- want you to believe that man, and particularly Americans, are THE cause of dramatic and dangerous global warming. But they have come to the rescue; they have the answer. What the rest of us must do is substantially alter our lifestyle, cripple our economy, and sacrifice some of the freedoms we enjoy.

Now, I am not going to get into a deep discussion about whether global warming is a reality or not, or what may have caused it, or what may solve the problem -- if there is a problem. You could cite your experts, I could site my experts... and we would accomplish nothing.

Nope; instead, I am going to provide a series of irrefutable statements about the global warming issue in order to put the debate in perspective. No mumbo-jumbo, scientific jargon; just simple, undeniable fact and logic.

As usual, you will not hear most of these things in the mainstream media. Their job is to make news and scare you. My job is to document the truth.

The issue (and this essay) was pushed front and center by a report released last week by an international group sponsored by the United Nations. The United Nations is an anti-American, anti-capitalist organization. The report blames us and our lifestyle for global warming.

The report issued last week is a summary of the complete study. The factual details of the report will be doled out over the next several months, largely below the radar of the mainstream press. The summary was written by politicians, not scientists; the headlines may bear little resemblance to the facts contained in the study.

The gradual warming and cooling of the earth is a cyclical phenomenon. What we are experiencing now is neither new nor unique nor dangerous.

The amount of global warming over the last century is estimated to be about 1 degree. That is well within the measurement margin of error. In other words, we cannot tell precisely if or how much global warming may have occurred over the last century.

Indeed, the temperatures may have been warmer than normal the last 20 years. But they were cooler that normal in the 30 years prior to that.

Over the past 3,000 years there have been five extended periods when the earth was measurably warmer than it is today. How can automobile emissions and industrial pollution be responsible for global warming that occurred three thousand years ago? The global warming nuts will not acknowledge or discuss that.

Many of the scientists pushing global warming receive funds to promote global warming. If interest in global warming wanes, so do their funds.

"Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects. The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality." -- Newsweek, April 28, 1975.

The only problem with that is that Newsweek was writing about global COOLING, not global warming.

The full article is fascinating. In perspective, it shows how foolish we were then... and, by implication, still are today. Click here to view the entire article in a separate window.

On July 24, 1974 Time Magazine published an article entitled "Another Ice Age?"

"As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval. However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age."

Then there was this from "The Cooling World" in the April 28, 1975 edition of Newsweek:

"There are ominous signs that the Earth's weather patterns have begun to change dramatically.... The evidence has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up.... Meteorologists are almost unanimous [that] the resulting famines could be catastrophic.... A survey completed last year reveals a drop in average ground temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere.... The present decline has taken the planet about a sixth of the way toward the Ice Age average.... Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate, [like] melting the Arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot.... The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality."

"The New York Times reported in 1975 that "many signs" suggest that the "earth may be headed for another ice age," and Science magazine that this cooling could be the beginning of "a full-blown 10,000-year ice age." It seemed sensible because, as NASA data show, there was indeed a 30-year, 0.2-degree Celsius cooling trend from 1940 to 1970.

Kyoto Schamoto

The Kyoto Protocol is supposed to address global warming by placing limits on industrial production and consumption. Two of the biggest polluters, India and China, are exempt from restrictions of the protocol.

(Thirty times every year, China fires up a generator fueled by coal that generates enough energy to power a city the size of San Diego. China plans to construct over 2,000 new coal plants by 2030. And yet, the socialists among us have exempted China from the restrictions of the protocol.)

The Kyoto Protocol is an attempt to make all of us equal. It is not about science or safety. It is social engineering at its most extreme -- and most dangerous.

The elitists blame the Bush administration for not supporting the Kyoto Protocol. Today, many Democrats are demanding we ratify the protocol. What they fail to tell you is that the Senate took the initiative and voted on the principles of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 -- and rejected them by a vote of 95-0.

"President Clinton and his earnest vice president knew better than to seek ratification of Kyoto by a Senate that had passed its resolution of disapproval 95-0. Fifty-six of those 95 senators are still serving. Two of them are John Kerry and Barbara Boxer. That is an inconvenient truth."

The Kyoto agreement to limit carbon emissions will make little difference and is likely to fail.

Even advocates of Kyoto admit that if all nations signed the agreement and obeyed it, it would affect global temperatures by less than a tenth of a degree.

Almost none of the nations that ratified the Kyoto Protocol are currently meeting Kyoto's requirements. Thirteen of the original 15 European signatories will likely miss the 2010 emission reduction targets. Spain will miss its target by 33 percentage points and Denmark by 25 points. Targets aside, Greece and Canada have seen their emissions rise by 23% and 24%, respectively, since 1990.

Science by Consensus

Those social activists pushing the fear over global warming claim that there is a consensus among scientists that global warming exists, and that man is the cause of global warming.

Well, la-de-da. Ladies and gentlemen, science is not about consensus; it is about facts and proof. Einstein's theory of Relativity is called a theory because not every scientist accepts it as true. But the arrogant elitists of our generation want you to believe that global warming is an absolute fact, because there is supposedly a consensus among scientists.

Balderdash!

"There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth." -- http://oism.org/pproject/s33p37.htm

So say over 15,000 scientists.

Consensus -- ?? Balderdash!

The tizzy over global warming is much ado about nothing. The notion that we should alter our lifestyle, cripple our economy, and yield our freedoms because of global warming is nonsense.

The debate over global warming is driven by politics; not by facts. And those shouting about global warming are dong so with a hidden agenda -- an agenda which has nothing to do with the weather.

To the extent that the hubbub is caused by the self-centered boomer generation elite... well, we are responsible for that.

To believe that we understand the universe and all its forces is some combination of naivety and arrogance -- and certainly foolish. To attempt to punish us by forcing us to adhere to a set of restrictive standards because of this false belief is misguided and immoral. And to hide your true agenda in doing so is despicable.

That's not exactly the legacy I have in mind for our generation.

How about you?

For more information on the subject, I recommend these sources, from which I drew material for this week's essay:

1. The Theology of Global Warming -- It's based on politics, not science; James Schlesinger, Saturday, August 13, 2005.

2. Kyoto? No Go. How to combat "global warming" without destroying the economy. -- Pete DuPont.

3. Cooler Heads Needed -- George Will.

4. A Convenient Lie -- John Stossel.

5. Random Thoughts -- Thomas Sowell:
"Climate statistics show that, with all the "global warming" hysteria today, our temperatures are still not as high as they were back in medieval times. Those medieval folks must have been driving a lot of cars and SUVs."

6. Climate of Opinion -- The latest U.N. report shows the "warming" debate is far from settled. -- Wall Street Journal.

7. "It could cost tens of trillions (in expenditures and foregone economic growth, here and in less-favored parts of the planet) to try to fine-tune the planet's temperature. We cannot know if these trillions would purchase benefits commensurate with the benefits that would have come from social wealth that was not produced." -- Inconvenient Kyoto Truths -- George Will.

The BBHQ Album of the Month is "Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)," by Simon & Garfunkel. If you were fortunate enough to see them in concert last year, I do not have to sell you. The concert was terrific! This album collection includes 55 songs, plus their new recording, "Citizen of the Planet," and one of the songs sung by the Everly Brothers during the concert. The DVD was recorded during their concert in Madison Square Garden in 2003. For any S&G fan, this is a must have! But then, you knew that already, didn't you? Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)

The BBHQ Book of the Month is "The 5000 Year Leap," by W. Cleon Skousen. The title does not adequately identify the content, though the concept of the 5,000 year leap is astounding. The subtitle, Principles of Freedom 101, is much more applicable to the subject. This book carefully and clearly summarizes the thinking of the brilliant founding fathers of our country, the ideas behind the "miracle that changed the world."
