BBHQ Boomer Essays: |
| Our Boomer-In-Charge here at BBHQ, Hershel Chicowitz, writes frequently about current events... from a boomer perspective. He is sometimes funny, sometimes provocative, sometimes a little of each. We hope you get a kick out of our Boomer Essays. |

Anyway, I had to find a replacement... and fast. But this was not going to be easy. The Chicowitz's have always bought new cars -- cash only. We buy 'em, and we keep 'em till they drop. But when I paid $11,000 for the Mazdamobile in 1980, I thought I was crazy. The notion of paying three times that in today was out of the question. If I paid $30,000 for a car, my dad would strangle me -- and he's been dead for a quarter-century. So I accepted the reality that I would have to find a good, used car... if there were such a thing. Hmmmm... what car was noted for decades as reliable. Reliability is of paramount importance. Well, I found this used car right next door to my Mazda mechanic's shop:
Oh, it still runs... it is reliable. But the price of this Tin Lizzie would make Henry Ford roll over in his grave. OK, maybe that's going back a bit too far. My mother told me she always loved the first vehicle she drove, a 1-horsepower, air-cooled carriage:
But that would not do, either. Heck, there is no CD player in the dash!
I do like the idea of not having to change spark plugs. At a one-of-a-kind vehicle shop in Orlando, I found this special-purpose transporter:
Is that me? Or what? But there was no room for Princess in the front seat. So I had to rule that one out.
What's that? You cannot see me tooling down the road in a husky, man's car -- a Cadillac Seville -- getting about 4 miles per gallon? Well, look again:

Well... this was going to be even more difficult than I had expected. I am exhausted; and I have run out of space. I'll wrap this up in part 4. But let not your heart be troubled. Like every episode of "Leave it to Beaver," it does have a happy ending!
The Mazdamobile story is a four-part series:
