The Year was 1965... the Month: May ---
"Mrs. Brown, you've got a lovely daughter." How many times have I used that line? Well, it is the title of the number 1 song of May 1965. What a terrific month! From out of nowhere and in the number 2 position was "Count Me In," by Gary Lewis and the Playboys. So many other fabulous top-10 hits were new to the charts in May 1965: "Ticket to Ride" (Beatles), "Help Me, Rhonda" (Beach Boys), "Wooly Bully" (Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs), and the wonderful instrumental, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," by the Sounds Orchestral - they were all new in May 1965 - and they are all still terrific 35 years later!
Glenn Yarbrough's had his only top-20 hit in May 1965, "Baby the Rain Must Fall." And the Supremes were right in the middle of their fabulous run; "Back in My Arms Again" was number 12.
I was in high school in 1965, ready for a summer at the pool and a vacation to Daytona Beach. Life was simple and care-free; and the music was out of this world! I didn't realize how special those times were. But I knew then, and I know how, how special the music was!
Indeed... those were the days!
What were you doing... in May of 1965?
