March: President Johnson declares war on poverty. He signs an Economic Opportunity Act in August and appoints R. Sargent Shriver, to head the new Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO).

A gallon of gasoline costs 30 cents.

In time for the last of the baby boomers, Hasbro introduces the G.I. Joe doll.

Anticipating the baby boomers, a bar in San Francisco introduces a topless bar. Later that year, the bottoms go, too.

February: The twenty-fourth amendment to the Constitution makes U.S. poll taxes unconstitutional.

The Beatles "invade" the U.S. on Feb, 7, and appearing first on the Ed Sullivan Show.

August: The bodies of three civil rights workers are found in Philadelphia, Mississippi.

July: President Johnson signs the bill enacting Medicare. The "Great Society" is under way.

Dr. Luther L. Terry, the U.S. Surgeon General, issues a report linking cigarette smoking to lung cancer and other diseases.

"Hello Dolly," "Funny Girl," and "Fiddler on the Roof" premier in New York. It is another terrific year for Broadway.

Leonoid Brezhnev assumes power in the Soviet Union. So it appears as though Nikita Khrushchev will not "bury us" after all; but the cold war continues, nevertheless.

December: President Johnson announces a substantial increase in U.S. aid to South Vietnam "to restrain the mounting infiltration of men and equipment by the Hanoi regime in support of the Vietcong."

August: Congress approves the Tonkin Gulf Resolution authorizing President Johnson to "take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression."

The Academy award for Best Picture goes to "My Fair Lady." Julie Andrews wins for Best Actress in "Mary Poppins."
