Neither Rain, Nor Sleet...
|
We do not use a third-party mailing service to send our newsletter. We do
it the old-fashioned way; we're as self-reliant as possible. But
sometimes we hit a roadblock. It apparently happened last week. Many of
you did not receive our newsletter newsletter on January 17. We saw it
happening, but could not do anything about it.
Nothing we can do about it now, either, though you can view last week's newsletter online
here.
In the event of a sudden drop in cabin pressure this
should happen again, the backup plan is our
newsletter archives.
We usually post our newsletter in the online archives by midnight, Sunday
evening.

Eye Remember... when cops shows on TV had a much softer edge. Even Kojak
had a soft side. And Toody and Muldoon... aw, they were pushovers.

Only the mediocre are always at their best. - Jean Giraudoux

|
|
If you are a Laurel & Hardy fan, this is one you want to see. It's an
excerpt from a song and dance routine called "Commence to Dancing" that
they performed in "Way Out West." Heck, even if you are not a fan, you'll
get a kick out of it.
This ranks up there with Donald O'Connor's "Make 'em Laugh" routine in
"Singin' in the Rain." It's so silly, you can't help but laugh.

Click the picture, above, to watch the video.
But it gets even better. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will air "Way Out
West" Wednesday morning at 4:30 a.m., eastern. It is one of their best
movies. Set your recorder; it is a delightful diversion from the troubles
of the day.

Our Lyrics You Can Share for this week come a wonderful hit song by
Peter, Paul, and Mary.... though it was written by John Denver. This is
from "Leavin' on a Jet Plane":
All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go;
I'm standing here, outside your door;
Hate to wake you up to say goodbye.
But the dawn is breaking', it's early morn';
Taxi's waitin', he's blowing his horn;
Already I'm so lonesome I could die.
So kiss me and smile for me;
tell me that you'll wait for me;
hold me like you'll never let me go.
I'm leavin' on a jet plane;
don't know when I'll be back again;
Oh babe, I hate to go.

The BBHQ Joke of the Week
|
Well, it's been a while since we dished up a blonde joke. If that
unnerves you, think of it as a brunette joke, though it may not be as
funny. This is called "in a vacuum."
|
A blonde was playing Trivial Pursuit one night. It was her turn.
She rolled the dice and landed on Science & Nature.
Her question was, "If you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name,
can you hear it?"
She thought for a time and then asked, "Is it on or off?"

Brush Up Your Webster - featuring Madam Red Dot
|
|
Last Tuesday, the well-educated and well-spoken Fox News host Bill
O'Reilly responded to a viewer criticism regarding O'Reilly's use of the
word "idiot" to describe Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik.
Reading from prepared text, O'Reilly said,
"I said that the sheriff knew Congresswoman Giffords had received
threats, but did not assign one single deputy to the event.
'Idiot' is the proper adjective to describe that occurrence."
|
|
|

(Click the picture, above, to watch a short video clip of Mr. O'Reilly's
response.)
Surely, Mr. O'Reilly knew better than that. "Idiot" is a noun, not an
adjective. "Idiotic" is the adjective form of the word. But it was not an
"occurrence" that Mr. O'Reilly criticized; it was the sheriff's failure
to provide security. The sheriff was idiotic for his failure to do so...
though I would have used the term "inexcusably irresponsible";
"inexcusably" is an adverb which modifies the adjective
"irresponsible." But "idiot" made the point sharper; I understand.
Still, "idiot" is not an adjective, sharp or not.
So... brush up your Webster!
That includes you, Mr. Bill.

Uncle Jay is one of our favorite boomer... artists.
Last week Uncle Jay wished the citizens of Tunisia well, and identified,
for all of us, the capital of that small African country:

This Week with the Chicowitz
|
This week, Hershel keeps ahead of the curve by exposing the fallacy of
trying to "get the deficit under control":
So, exactly what constitutes "getting the deficit under control"? Is it
under a trillion dollars? Maybe under 500 billion dollars? I want a
specific number, so that when we hit it, there will be no doubt; we can
all agree. "Yep; we did it. We've got the deficit under control! Whew!
All is well. Now we can smile and relax. Mission accomplished." -- In a
word, balderdash!
