OK, our sponsor is not TurboTax. But honestly, how did we survive without it? Not well, huh?

And why do we need any type of tax preparation assistance? Oh... another topic for another day.

But for now, it is what it is. Thank goodness there is TurboTax!

The Real Birth of the Moonwalk

In response to the BBHQ Monday Morning Upper last week, several of you noted that Michael Jackson was not the first to do the moonwalk.

Indeed he was not. Though he called it by a different name, entertainer Bill Bailey created the move nearly a century ago. As a bonus, available only to BBHQ newsletter subscribers this week, we offer a short video of his performance at the Apollo Theatre in 1955.

This Week with the Chicowitz

The Death of a Friend

I lost track of Mike after we graduated, but we got back together at each of our high school reunions. He was just the same; it was as if we were still best friends. Oh, Mike still lived in Cleveland; I had long-since moved away. Mike was married; I was not. But we were still good buddies. I really liked him. Mike was fun; Mike was smart; Mike was simply a good person.

About six months ago, I got a note from Mike’s wife saying that Mike had broken his leg. It was rather strange... he was just walking across the living room when his leg gave out. That’s not supposed to happen... not unless the entire bone in your leg has been eaten away. For some reason, the cancer started in his leg, and then quickly spread throughout his body.

In the spirit of giving, we were highly flattered last December by the number of BBHQ visitors who, in response to our "Traditions of Christmas" essays, wanted to present us with a Christmas gift. We had a preference for cash, but asking for that would be sort of like asking Santa for cash. No; gauche and highly inappropriate.

We deferred in December. But, after thinking about it for a few months, we decided to suggest, respectfully, for your consideration, several examples from our substantial wish-list. Here is our first suggestion:

This is the electric boat with a hot tub built into its deck. The craft's Vinylester hull is topped with a slatted deck handcrafted from African teak. The hot tub measures 8' L x 4' W x 24" D and is positioned on the boat's center of buoyancy, providing the boat exceptional stability. An integrated diesel-powered boiler with an adjustable thermostat heats the tub's water to a maximum 104 F. A waterproof stereo system plays music from your MP3 player through two flush-mounted 50-watt speakers that pop-up from the deck. Four ice chests built into the deck provide ample storage for your preferred libation with additional storage compartments fore and aft. A teak swimstep provides easy entry into and from the surrounding water. A 24-volt electric motor propels the boat up to 5 mph on calm water, steered via a joystick by a bather located starboard/aft. Dry Weight 1,200 lbs.

It is a status symbol extraordinaire!

Every sophisticated boomer family should own one of these.

I Remember... April 11, 1970:

Space enthusiasts were still thrilled with the first landing on the moon two years earlier. On April 11, 1970, three astronauts on board Apollo 13 braced for the third trip to the moon.

Never mind the superstition about the number 13. We were on a roll. Apollo 13 blasted off without a hitch.

Two days later, however, it was a different story. "Houston; we've had a problem."

Only through the miraculous skill of the NASA scientists did the three astronauts return to earth safely.

The BBHQ Joke of the Week

My 15-year-old son asked me to drive him to his friend's house. Once we were in the car and several minutes had passed in silence, I attempted to open the lines of communication.

"Did you have a nice day at school?"

"Yep."

"Any homework to do?"

"Nope."

"Did you get your hair cut?"

"Yep."

"This is a monosyllabic conversation isn't it?"

"Yep."

"You do know what monosyllabic means?"

"Yep."

"Well, tell me."

Ah-ha, I thought, now he has to give me a dictionary explanation.

With a mischievous grin and a sly look at me, he replied, "One."

Have a great week. We'll share the fun again next Monday!
