BBHQ

June 11, 2012

Links here are good only for the week of June 11. After that... is anybody's guess.

Father's Day: Late, but Ahead of the Crowd

One of the disadvantages of publishing a newsletter on Monday is that we miss celebration of the Sunday holidays. No one wants to hear about Father's Day on the day after Father's Day.

But we have a very special Father's Day feature this year. So, we're starting early, and running with it all week.

No, it's not a special sale on mattresses. It's a sweet tribute to "The Old Man."

It took us longer than expected to put it together, which explains why we are late sending our newsletter this week.

Newsletter Table of Contents

• Old Business
• Monday Upper: "The Old Man"
• BBHQ Quick-Links
• Insta-Quote
• This Week's Essay
• Trivia Teaser
• The BBHQ Essay Collection
• BBHQ Joke of the Week
• Brush Up Your Webster

It's Monday all week at BBHQ. This video will be available every day, through next Sunday, Father's Day.

Old Business

Last week's Trivia Teaser:

1. First, our current events question: We made a reference to Michael Bloomberg earlier in our newsletter. What did the mayor of New York City do this time?
proposed a ban on smoking.
proposed a ban on french fries.
proposed a ban on hot dogs.
proposed a ban on "big gulp" drinks.
proposed a ban on large dogs.
proposed a ban on baseball.

This time, the mayor appears to reached too far (a common failure in government these days). This one may never make it into law.

2. We caught a few of you last time when we asked if the Obama campaign is really selling t-shirts with "My 2 moms support Obama" printed on them. (Yes, they are.) Let's see how far can we push it. The Obama campaign is also selling a cat collar -- yes, a cat collar -- with tag line "I meow for Michelle" on it.
Aw, come on. We gotta' be making this up. Is that really true?
Yes, it is.

3. OK, now to some real boomer-era trivia. One of Neil Diamond's signature songs is "Coming to America." That song was introduced in what motion picture? (Hint: So was "Love on the Rocks," "Hello, Again," "Songs of Life," "Summer Love," and "On the Robert E. Lee."
"The Jazz Singer" -- not the 1927 Al Jolson version; the 1980 version.

Three more coming up, below.

A BBHQ Insta-Quote

Monday Morning Upper

This is one family's touching tribute to a father. The song is "The Old Man," performed by John McDermott.

This one will tug at your heart. But it's a very special video. Save it for when you've got five minutes of your own. It'll be worth it.

Click the graphic for the BBHQ Monday Morning Upper:

This Monday's feature will be available every day, through Sunday.

This Week with the Chicowitz

This week, Hershel introduces a new trivia contest:

We have trivia! Saturday morning TV trivia; 60s rock & roll trivia; TV game show trivia; TV commercials trivia; good guy/bad guy trivia; 60s TV shows trivia; 70s TV shows trivia; trivia you never heard of trivia... well, maybe not that. But we have tons of boomer-era trivia. This week we present another edition of Name That Tune, this one featuring Neil Diamond's greatest hits. Listen to the audio clue; then, name that tune.

You can read the entire essay here.

The BBHQ Trivia Teaser

Here are three questions from the BBHQ Trivia Cloud:

1. First, our current events question: Green jobs. Who doesn't love and respect green jobs? We want to have and to see as many of them as possible. And we've got a slew of them! According to recent Congressional testimony by John Galvin, of the the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), part of the Department of Labor, which of the following is NOT considered a green job by the BLS?
sweeping the floor at a solar power factory
driving a school bus
working as an antique dealer
working in a bicycle shop
a lobbyist for environmental issues in the oil industry
they ALL are green jobs
now you've gone too far; none of them qualifies

2. He was one of the great boomer-era disc jockeys, working in New York, and heard all over the country. In fact, he still hosts a show on Sirius radio. He is our favorite Cousin .

3. From our Lyrics You Know You Know collection, fill in the last line:
"I just can't get over losing you
And so if I seem, broken and blue
      ."

There are no prizes here... it's all just for fun.

Members can play all of our trivia games in The BBHQ Trivia Library.

The BBHQ Trivia Contest returns in the Fall.

Rebuilding the BBHQ Essay Collection

This week we feature another story in our "Teach, Preach, and Nag" series.

The Boomers' Greatest Immorality

Boomers are often criticized for being selfish, self-centered, fat, and lazy. I would disagree with the part about being lazy. But maybe... I guess a lot of us are. Critics claim that we have dumbed down our schools and coddled and abandoned our kids. To those critics I say, "Make up your mind." But they have a point. Though one other thing trumps all those. There is one thing for which we will never be forgiven, one immorality that makes all the other shortcomings of our generation insignificant.

The BBHQ Joke of the Week

If you want to sound impressive...

"Insofar as manifestations of functional deficiencies are agreed by any and all concerned parties to be imperceptible and are so stipulated, it is incumbent upon said heretofore mentioned parties to exercise the deferment of otherwise pertinent maintenance procedures."

Or, in simpler terms, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Brush Up Your Webster - featuring Madam Red Dot

School's out for the summer! Madam Red Dot is on vacation.

If all goes as planned, Madam Red Dot will return the Monday after Labor Day.

So... brush up your Webster!

Have a great week. We'll share the fun again next Monday.
