And now, a word from our sponsor:

This Week with the Chicowitz

The Fifties

The excitement and turmoil of the 60s tends to hide the 50s in the shadows. But the 50s does not belong there. Most boomers were born in the 50s; and whether we realize it or not, the 50s made a huge impression on us. It is a part of who we are today... though, perhaps, too small a part.

When we think of the “boomer years,” we usually think of the 60s and 70s. The excitement and turmoil of the 60s tends to put the 50s in the shadows. But the 50s does not belong there. Most boomers were born in the 50s; and whether we realize it or not, the 50s made a huge impression on us. It is a part of who we are today... though, perhaps, too small a part.

If you want to understand the 60s, you should start with the 50s. So I’d like to take brief look back... mostly in pictures. Please come along with me. It’ll be fun.

Eye Remember... August 1, 1966:

Eye remember August 1, 1966... though with considerable discomfort. It was the first mass killing that I remember; and it was right out in the open, at a major university.

The night before, 25 year-old Charles Whitman murdered both his sister and his wife. On August 1 he headed to the observaton deck of the Tower at the University of Texas. Ninety minutes later, he had killed 16 people.

The shooting ended when 3 Austin police officers and a civilian made their way to the Tower, found and shot Whitman.

The deadly incident was so shocking because it was so rare. Neither boomers nor our parents had ever seen anything like it.

Having nothing other that the date in common, on August 1, 1981, MTV went on the air. But I do not remember that date fondly, either. MTV killed rock and roll. But that's another story.

He's 8-feet tall! Sitting down! After a few minutes of inflation, duckie takes on his friendly, bulbous aquatic form. Floating in fresh or saltwater with a bouncing buoyancy that compels wanton waterplay, duckie accepts all playmates with voluminous pupiled eyes - whether as a base for a game of alligator tag or as a listening ear for a lonely child... or child-like boomer.

The BBHQ Joke of the Week
This week we offer a few thoughts worthy of brief contemplation:

Wouldn't it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes; come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller!

Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met yet.

I don't need anger management. I need people to stop ticking me off!

Old age is coming at a really bad time!

Lord grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and friends to post my bail when I finally snap.

Have a great week. We'll share the fun again next Monday.
