Links here are good only for the week of August 30. After that... is
anybody's guess.
The best part of August, as we recall, is the state fair. In 1967, we
went to the Ohio State Fair. In addition to cows, pigs, horses, race
cars, and world class skydivers, the 1967 Ohio State Fair presented Bob
Hope, Andy Williams, The New Vaudeville Band, Herman's Hermits, the
Sandpipers, and Diana Ross and the Supremes.
Heck of a lineup, huh?

Glenn Beck's rally at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial reminds Americans
of Dr. Martin Luther King's speech there in 1963. We don't remember much
specifically about that day. But we do remember that throughout the
sixties, Dr. Martin Luther King made us look in the mirror and think...
about ourselves, our country, and our values.
That is one thing that the rally in Washington on Saturday shared with
Dr. King and the speech he gave there in 1963.

Our summertime "Lyrics You Can Share" for this week come from
a great summer song by Gary Lewis and the Playboys, "Green Grass":
Green grass 'round my window
Young leaves that the wind blows
Yes, it's springtime, golden sunshine
And we're glad, my little love and I
Now that summertime is nigh
Carefree, kissin' couples
Dream away, all their troubles,
'cause it's springtime, golden sunshine
While the bluebirds sing their magic song
We will love the summer long

The BBHQ Joke of the Week
|
It has been too long since we picked on attorneys. The is a portion of a
trial transcript, an attorney cross-examining a physician:
ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you
check for a pulse?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive
when you began the autopsy?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, doctor?
WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.
ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive,
nevertheless?
WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and
practicing law.

Brush Up Your Webster - with Madam Red Dot
|
Madam Red Dot is on the road this summer. Road signs fascinate her.
 |
|
We have all seen the "Children at Play" roadsign.
But this "Student Crossing" sign gave Madam Red Dot pause. Would this
be a high school student, a college student, or a graduate student?
And, what should one do when approaching a "Student Crossing" zone?

Uncle Jay is one of our favorite boomer... artists.
Uncle Jay is on vacation this week. (Afte all, who isn't?) So he tossed
up a re-run. His word for the week is "reconciliation."

This Week with the Chicowitz
|
This week, Hershel remembers the days of summers past, and tells us about
a vacation and a secret mission to tame a hurricane:
We left Tampa early Thursday morning, made a brief stop at the Kennedy
Space Center and then headed north to Ft. Pulaski, on the coast near
Savannah, Georgia. The folks at NASA had provided us with three pounds of
a super-secret powder used to disperse bad weather before space shuttle
launches. Packed in a small, clear, plastic bag, the powder bore an
uncomfortable resemblance to cocaine, a fact which did not escape us...
or a police officer who happened to glance at us at a stop light in
Jacksonville. It took a phone call to NASA and another one to NBC weather
guy Willard Scott to clear us. We were on an assignment!
