Links here are good only for the week of December 28. After that... is anybody's guess.

We try not to get political with our Upper, but this is just plain funny, no matter where you stand.

If you do not laugh at this... you are a political grinch!

Still the season!

As noted above, this is New Year's Eve Week -- if that makes any sense. It does to us. So, we're still in a festive mood. The BBHQ Home page will continue the Christmas theme through Wednesday. The BBHQ Traditions of Christmas Collection will also be available through Thursday.

In truth, the Christmas spirit remains alive at BBHQ year-round!

Hurricane Preparedness

It's never too early to start planning. The Boomer Crew has been invited to participate in a hurricane preparedness workshop in Boise, Idaho next week. So we'll be absent on Monday, the 4th. We'll have a new BBHQ Monday Morning Upper on auto-pilot. But there will be no newsletter next Monday.

(Heck of a way to start a new year, huh?)

Remembering "Thank You"

Why is it that people (too many people) do not send thank-you notes for gifts they receive at Christmas, Hanukkah, weddings, graduation...? I do not understand it.

Bewildered, I asked a friend. She informed me that my experience was not unusual. These are different times, different values. Young adults do things differently these days, she explained. Don't worry about it.

Well, I’m not worried – not exactly. I am offended – and angry. This kind of behavior does not represent different values – it represents an absence of values. And you may accuse me of trying to force my values on society. Well pardon my language, but damn right I am! I am offended that we live in such a rude society that we have disbanded common rules of civility.

Today, we have express mail, e-mail, voice-mail, cell phones, smartphones, call forwarding, call waiting, Blackberries, IPhones, IPads, Kindles, answering machines, text messaging, MagicJack, and Skype – not to mention the simple, first-class letter. Can you hear me now? (No; Facebook and Twitter do not count. You cannot send a proper thank-you note in 143 characters. No!)

But apparently, we’re too busy, or too involved; or maybe we just don’t know how to write any more. Maybe it’s just another sign of the failure of the Reagan-Bush-Bush administrations.

I Remember... December 28...

On December 28, 1958, The Chipmunk Song, ("Christmas, Christmas, time is here") hit number 1.

A decade later, December 28, 1968, the Beatles' "White Album" ("Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Happiness is a Warm Gun.") reached the number 1 spot.

That pretty-well shows how the 60s changed things, huh?

('Course, half-a-century later, the Chipmunks are still doin' their thing. Make of that what you will.)

The BBHQ Trivia Teaser

Here are three questions from the BBHQ cloud:

1. First, our current events question:
We'd prefer to ignore politics, but that's all that is in the news.
Which Republican candidate for president dropped out of the race last week?
      Ben Carson
      George Pataki
      Lindsey Graham
      John Kasich
      Jim Webb
      Harold Stassen

2. Aw, we all remember this one: "Please don't squeeze the
."

3. And another one we all remember:
"When you wish upon a star
makes no difference ."

There are no prizes here... it's just for fun.

The BBHQ Joke of the Week

This week we offer a few more tips on getting through the holidays without putting on extra weight:

1. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Years, You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

2. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa. Position yourself near them, and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. You can't leave them behind. You're not going to see them again.

3. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

4. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean have some standards, mate.

5. And one final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Reread tips. Start over. But hurry! Cookieless January is just around the corner.

Have a great week and a great New Year's Eve celebration! We'll share the fun again on January 11.
