This Week with The Chicowitz
A Dissenting Voice
Each week our Boomer-In-Charge, Hershel Chicowitz, has something to
say about life, society, or what's going on... from the perspective of a
boomer. (Imagine Andy Rooney... less 40 years.)
This is what's on his mind for the week of March 23:
[Editor's note: This essay was originally published in March 1998.]
We have received over 3,000 pieces of mail here at BBHQ since we opened
last July. We respond to every piece of e-mail we receive. Most of
the mail has been favorable, but we have had our detractors. There was
one interesting unsolicited e-mail message that came in last week. Since
it really addresses all boomers rather than just BBHQ, I thought I would
like to share it with you:
Dear Self-Admiring Boomer:
I KNEW, I just KNEW that you bunch of self-celebratory, self-absorbed
ex-hippies would actually have 44 web pages on Yahoo! alone.
God, you are so myopic, you boomers. You know, I don't mind the fact
that you think the world revolves around you, but why don't you stop
trying to make the world over in your sorry, flaccid image and just pack
up the kids, your soccer moms, your traitor president and your
draft-dodging Republican congressmen, put all of you in a mini van and
hole yourselves up in some gated alternative-lifestyles community.
I thank God every day that I was born in January 1965. I'm 26
days removed from your me-generation, your "having it all" philosophy of
life, your head in the sand politics, your pusillanimous posing posturing
as protest, your anti-American rallies, etc.
I'm proud to be a Gen-Xer, and when it comes time for the lot of you to
go on Social Security, then you can be damned sure you will all bankrupt
the country with your greedy, consuming ways, living off the money WE
produce.
But, we'll do to you what you do to the WW2 (God bless 'em, but they
spoiled you guys much too much) generation: We'll put you in nursing
homes, and let sadistic nurses abuse all of you, why we live high on the
hog, "have it all" and smite the world with our punk rock, our death
metal while you re-live Woodstock Nation, dancing with the aid of your
walkers, suffering from VD *and* incontinence from all your free love
and Jerry Garcia lifestyles.
I remember the day when I was seven years old in 1972 and I said "excuse
me, Ma'am" to the woman in front of me at the 7-11, and she turned
around and wasn't a woman at all, but a man with a beard.
"What was *that*?" I asked my old man.
"Son. That was a hippy."
"What's a hippy?"
"Well, son, hippies hate America, they spit on our soldiers, and some
sad day, years from now, they will run the country. That will be the
end of America."
ALL YOU BOOMERS, GO VISIT DR. JACK KERVORKIAN AND PUT THE REST OF US OUT
OF OUR MISERY YOU NARCISSISTIC, SHALLOW SCUM!
Sincerely,
RJ
So whadda' ya' think? I suspect he does not represent all Gen-Xer's,
but he appears to be articulate. Does he have a point? Is he right?
Is this how other generations look at us? How should I respond to him?
What I should do is give you his name and e-mail address and let you
respond to him directly; but I suspect that might be "piling on." But if
you write me and tell me what you think, I'll pass it on to him without
revealing your e-mail address.

The BBHQ Album of the Month
is "Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD),"
by Simon & Garfunkel. If you were fortunate enough to see them in concert
last year, I do not have to sell you. The concert was terrific! This
album collection includes 55 songs, plus their new recording, "Citizen of
the Planet," and one of the songs sung by the Everly Brothers during the
concert. The DVD was recorded during their concert in Madison
Square Garden in 2003. For any S&G fan, this is a
must have! But then, you knew that already, didn't you?

The BBHQ Book of the Month is
"Vinyl Highway," by
Dee Dee Phelps. You remember her as Dee Dee, of Dick and Dee Dee.
Together, they took a decade long ride on the rock and roll roller
coaster. It was a heck of a ride! Dick Clark, Quincy Jones, the Beach
Boys, Glenn Campbell, Dionne Warwick, Bobby Vinton... Dick and Dee Dee
rubbed shoulders with all of them. This is her "behind the scenes" story.
It's pretty cool.
